Fed: Reform of community care needed - ACS
CANBERRA, April 7 AAP - The elderly and disabled were missing out on services becauseof disjointed planning and poor communication between hospitals and community care services,a community services group said today.
Aged and Community Services Association of NSW and ACT (ACS) chief executive Paul Sadlersaid community care services were left to cope with the situation caused by this miscommunication.
He called for an overhaul of the whole community care system and the creation of anintegrated national policy.
"Community care services are the meat in the sandwich, trying to care for people whocan't access hospitals, nursing homes and disability services because of long waitinglists," he said in a statement.
Among those affected by the problem were older people who were discharged from hospitaltoo early, those with long-standing disabilities whose needs bridged different sectorsand people in rural and remote areas.
"More money from governments is undoubtedly part of the answer," Mr Sadler said.
"However, to solve these problems in the long term, we must have fundamental reformof community care programs in Australia."
The ACS will hold its annual community care conference in Sydney tomorrow.
