Fed: Labor should listen to Iraq governing council, says Downer

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says Labor should listen to a plea from Iraq's governing
council for Australian troops to remain there into next year.

Council member AHMAD CHALABI has told ABC TV Australian troops should remain in Iraq
for at least 12 months to help stabilise the country.

MR DOWNER says Labor leader MARK LATHAM should take heed of MR CHALABI'S comments.

MR LATHAM has said he wants the troops home by Christmas.

MR DOWNER says Australia won't define a timeline for its involvement in Iraq despite
MR CHALABI'S call for a further 12-month commitment.
